The Cyber Security Coalition, a unique partnership in the fight against cybercrime, and Cybersec Europe join forces to facilitate knowledge sharing on the subject of cyber security in Europe. Cathy Suykens, Operations Manager at Belgian Cyber Security Coalition answers some questions about cybersecurity.

What is the mission of the Belgian Cyber Security Coalition?

When the Belgian Cyber Security Coalition was created in 2015, cybersecurity was not yet high on the agenda of most companies. The occurrence of some notorious cyber incidents in Belgium compelled the parties involved to realize that cybersecurity is not an area of competition, but one where cooperation across sectors is necessary to boost Belgium’s cyber resilience. It is now widely acknowledged that CISOs and their teams, operating within a resource-constrained environment, cannot solve the issue alone.

The Coalition’s objective is to build and grow the cybersecurity community and provide a platform to enable information-sharing, the exchange of best practices and joint actions to combat cybercrime. It is very useful to view the threat landscape as an area where various organizations – public, private, and academic – have different lenses and perspectives. Our association also assumes an important role in education, awareness building and assistance to actors such as SMEs and schools which do not have enough knowledge or resources to secure their cyberspace.

What is the biggest cybersecurity threat for companies in 2023?

According to the 2023 Allianz Risk Barometer, cyber incidents and business interruption rank as the biggest company concerns for the second year in a row. Ransomware continues to be a significant cyber threat for companies, but it is difficult to understand the true impact of cyber attacks because many victims do not report them. The digitization of businesses has rendered it easier to steal intellectual property. Losing customer data to hackers can be costly and damage a company’s reputation; losing intellectual property to cyber criminals could threaten a company’s competitiveness.
